How To Stand Out As A Singer

Now a days, the music industry is looking for something to grab their attention...

Something more than being a good singer..

Something more than a nice image..

Something more than just a good song..

But what is this "it factor" that makes some artists stand out from the crowd and others not?

After being in the music industry for 10+ years and working with many many students online there is ONE major factor that every artist needs to have to really gain a following and a lengthy career beyond just one hit song. This is how to stand out as a singer.

That secret is..

AUTHENTICITY.

Authenticity is described in the Cambridge Dictionary as being "real or true."

WHY DOES YOUR AUDIENCE CARE ABOUT THIS?

  1. They can sense if you are being real. Are you singing about songs that mean something personal to you? They can sense and FEEL that. There is a feeling that comes with singing music that is real to you. People crave this! Everyone is looking for something real. Your audience is smarter than you think and they can sense the difference between real and not real to you.

  2. Everyone is craving real connection - to not just your songs but to YOU. Think about your favourite artists. Taylor Swift is a great example of this. She writes incredible vulnerable and real songs that she has gone through. We feel like we know her just by listening to her first album. Her heartbreak has become part of her personal brand because it's something she has actually gone through!

SO.. HOW DO WE START?

  1. Think about 3 main characteristics about yourself that you would want your audience to know about you. It could be "fun, light hearted and cheerful" or ... it could be "genuine, small town raised and down to earth". Start writing music that is about these things. Write about your upbringing, your story. If it's real to you, it will be real to someone else!

  2. Think about how you want to leave your audience feeling when they listen to your music. Do you want them to feel inspired? Write inspiring songs about life. Do you want them to dance? Write songs with a great tempo and catchy rhythm. Do you want them to cry? Write about your greatest heartbreaks. People will connect with you - but first you need to know how you want them to feel.

These two thoughts are not easy - but worth considering. Remember.. now a days it is NOT about exclusively talent. You need to have a story to tell.

Tell your story, be authentic, allow people to connect with you.

Wishing you all the very best.
